Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana, so of course I had to visit the Capitol. It was very close to where I was staying. I wish I had taken a better picture... The Louisiana Capitol building is the tallest capitol building in the US, and they are very proud of that.

We went on a little self-guided tour. The Memorial Hall has some beautiful paintings and two bronze chandeliers, each weighing two tons. I was careful not to stand under them...

We saw the House -

And the Senate.

And then we rode the elevator to the top. Governor Huey P. Long was responsible for getting this new Capitol built, and unfortunately was assassinated here in 1935. He is buried on the grounds and his statue in the square below faces the Capitol.

We could also see where we are staying (those white rigs down there) right along the Mississippi River.

We got a great view of the barges going up and down the river.

We also visited the Old State Capitol, now a museum.

It has a lovely stained glass dome.

As you can see, we didn't have the best weather here, so we didn't do much other than the Capitols. I think I'm in a hurry to get back out West - I miss it so much!
