It's a long drive from Page, AZ to Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, but there is a shortcut - the Cottonwood Wash road.
Forty miles of dirt road sounds bad until you look at the scenery.
Wow - it looks like something from another planet!
A close up.
There's even wildlife!
And then you get to Bryce Canyon. Wow!
I walked down a little ways among the hoodoos.
To see the Queen in the Queen's Garden.
Another overlook, Fairyland Point, is one of my favorites. It's actually just outside the entrance to the park.
Then another 40 miles on dirt road back to Page. On the way is Grosvenor Arch.
And more beautiful scenery the WHOLE way home!
Thanks Diana for the neat shortcut and of course, the outstanding photos! The colors and the contours are remarkable.

Nice shortcut. I see you stumbled upon one of the cows that legend has it could be lost in Bryce :-))
ReplyDeleteGreat Photos. We took that road to see Grosvenor Arch last year when we were at Bryce; quite a winding, bumpy adventure. No cow sightings.
ReplyDeleteAs Always, beautiful scenery and beautiful photos. Your so lucky to live in the west.
ReplyDeleteThat is some shortcut!
ReplyDeletewhat a great shortcut with fabulous views!!!
ReplyDeleteHey! Where's the pictures of the rusty stuff?
ReplyDeleteI guess I can forgive you because of that nice picture of that funny looking black and white animal. Was that some kind of skunk?
Stunning scenery with all those rocks. Well worth a visit.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful short cut but not for the faint of heart.
ReplyDeleteIt keeps getting better and better ! Outstanding photography !
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post! What a wonderful blog! Just discovered it.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
John

NOW that looks like a great road trip...the scenery is amazing..BUT all of UTAH is amazing--Gotta mark that spot on the map for the future--do you need a 4-wheel drive or any vehicle can make the trip?
ReplyDeleteQueen's Garden is a great hike at Bryce. We volunteered there one summer and love the place.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky, getting through on Cottonwood Wash. After rain, it can be impassable.
To answer Sondra, we took our Saturn on it, but it sure was a washboard road. I love that picture of Bryce - might have to steal that for my desktop. :-)
ReplyDeleteSondra, when we went on it, it was dry, but there were a few sandy places where you should probably have a 4-wheel drive. But any car can go as far as Grosvener Arch from the north end, except when the road is wet. Impassable then.
ReplyDeleteThat is a long way on a dirt road but if you are in no hurry, what a great way to see the "outback" of Utah and AZ. Great photos! The price is right and especially so when you are old enough to get the senior pass.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, I will be out there sometime soon.
One day I'm going to get to really visit Utah. One day. Great pics
ReplyDeleteWow more beautiful pictures. Bryce Canyon is breathtaking. Just too many places to visit.
