Lower Antelope Canyon

Many of you have probably seen pictures of Antelope Canyon, just outside Page, AZ, but most of the pictures are of Upper Antelope Canyon. I much prefer Lower Antelope Canyon.

It's more challenging, but a lot of fun. This is how you enter - just walk into the crack.

It's a little narrow, and some ladders are involved. When I first went in Lower Antelope Canyon in 1996, there were no ladders or tour guides - you were on your own.

Beautiful swirls are everywhere - its hard not to take hundreds of pictures. The best photos exclude any direct sunlight.

If you don't want to go on the tour, and want to wander around on your own, here's the secret - You must have a big camera and tripod. Then tell them when you pay that you want a "Photo Pass." You then have 2 hours to wander wherever you want.

But our tour guide, Victor, (here on the left) was very good, and I was glad I went on the tour.

More lovely swirls.

Down, down, down we go. Imagine climbing down those "Moki steps" before they put the ladder in.

Pretty, huh?

At the end, there is a long ladder to climb back to the surface. It's not a cheap tour - $26 including the Navajo permit - but well worth it.
