In Mesa for Awhile
I'm back in Mesa, AZ for a few weeks. It's amazing how hard it is to find something to blog about when you're sitting in one place. But I'll try...
I got this shot of a male Gila woodpecker showing off his red cap from my window. The only bad thing about them is that they like to get on top of my trailer and start tapping.
There's a great swap meet in Mesa on Baseline. New this year are these pots of different dogs and cats. They were really cute, and several people were selling them.
I found this t-shirt for Jim of Jim and Sandie. There's also a dog in the previous picture they would like.
There were lots of cute t-shirts there for us seniors.
And one advantage of being in Mesa is that my sister Barbara lives here. One day we did a hike up the hill from the north end of Meridian.
I'd like to come back here when the saguaros are in bloom, but it would be too hot to hike! This is the view looking back at Mesa.
And when you get to the saddle, there's a great view of the wilderness over the hill.
Somebody's even camped up here.
On the way back down, we spotted what I think is a tarantula. It was small though, so maybe it was a baby.

Welcome back. We went to the swap meet but with Jim not being able to walk, we didn't cover much territory and gave up and went home. Love the shirt and the puppy dog. Jim agrees that is the perfect shirt. Not going to skies tonight. Jim doesn't feel up to it. Someday.
ReplyDeleteNice to be back to a warm and familiar environment. Definitely a tarantula.
ReplyDeleteWe had a woodpecker attack our satellite dish. Talk about a natural alarm clock. Couple times a week for months.
ReplyDeleteWe visited the Mesa Natural History Museum the other day. It was fabulous. The Music Instrument Museum up in Scottsdale is great too.
I have a female Gila Woodpecker in my site - she is drinking from my hummingbird feeder, and then pecking on the Ocatillo that the feeder is hanging on. The female has no red cap, but does have a yellow belly. My first woodpecker photos. They are both very pretty, I hope there is a male here - I'd like a photo of that red cap, too. Your pic is really nice! :)
ReplyDeleteI also hope I DON'T see a tarantula, I can do without that picture!
I like that shot of the saguaros marching down the hill. :)
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking pictures. I cannot believe you got that shot of the woodpecker from inside! Awesome! :) I love the planters - would be tempted if I were there. Am trying very hard to not be envious of your beautiful WOW-factor hike. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your tires will appreciate the chance to stop rolling and cool off! ;c)
ReplyDeleteLove that woodpecker photo - I got a pic of a pileated woodpecker a few weeks ago but it was FAR away and pretty fuzzy - your photos are terrific!
ReplyDeleteFor a minority opinion, I also like the tarantula - takes me back to my days in west Texas.
I know you guys are going to enjoy time spent together..IT is hard to make an interesting blog when you are in the same town day in and out I have that same problem! I like the Woodpecker shot and the hike area looks Super!!
ReplyDeleteLove the woodpecker.
ReplyDeleteNice shot of the Gila woodpecker, he looks pretty sharp. Love the look of the hike you took.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment we are staying put but we have lots that we can talk about, eventually I am sure that we will run dry of ideas too!

Missed your posts too.
ReplyDeleteSince I have a healthy fear of poisonous creepy crawlies like spiders, scorpions and snakes. Do you come across those critters often while boondocking out in the desert? Especially in and around your camp?

Missed hearing from you. Glad to hear some news from you.
ReplyDeleteI bet those woodpeckers make quite a racket tapping on your rig!
ReplyDeleteYou always find the cutest things. And I love that shot of the woodpecker.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the area too. will be flying to OK for Thanksgiving, but will be back at AJ after. Great band at Skies last night. Liked the tarantula.

ReplyDeleteLife on the Road... how liberating! As a Free Spirited Gypsy Gal that lived the Nomadic Life for most of my Life... until my Senior years, I did just the opposite... and just over a decade ago settled down in one spot in a real house! *LOL* My long time Friends and Family were amazed that a Nomad such as myself could stay put... and I must say the wanderlust does tug at me at times even though I've come to love the Old House we're restoring. Shall I live here forever... can't say... but I do enjoy the Arizona Desert and have made this State my Home for longer than any other location I've ever lived in my Life!
