Tamales and Hot Dates
While in Indio, CA, we stayed at the Fantasy Springs Casino. Very nice - a huge parking lot, farther away from the interstate than the parking lot at Spotlight 29 Casino, your other free option.
While there, we went to the Tamale Festival nearby. I knew nothing about tamales, never having had one before, but there were lots of vendors to choose from.
First, we saw these cute kids perform.
Then went to look for a tamale or two to try. These "Gourmet Tamales" seemed like a good choice.
This is the "Caramelized Apple, Cinnamon and Butterscotch" dessert tamale. Looks good except for that corn husk... What? I don't have to eat that? Cool...
While in Indio, we also went to the Shields Date Garden to see their movie on "The Romance and Sex Life of the Date."
It was free, but they wanted $5 to tour their date palm garden. I didn't think it was necessary, since I could see them from the gate. Notice the permanently-installed ladders that they need to hand-fertilize the dates.
From Indio, we moved south to another casino, the Red Earth Casino, on the western shore of the Salton Sea. The casino is only a few years old, and has a free dump and water for RVs, in addition to a nice view and a parking lot away from the trucks. Plus, $10 in free slot play!

We stayed at Fantasy Springs Casino but there wasn't any tamale festival going on when we were there.

ReplyDeleteTamales are a Christmas tradition in AZ. Had a strawberry one for the first time. Add chips and salsa and its a great meal.
ReplyDeleteBeen to Fantasy Springs many times whne I lived in Cali. Great place! So you can park in their lot free?? I'm getting an RV later this year and would definitely spend some time there if it's free.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked that you put up an "X" rated post! Those poor dates, having their privacy invaded. :cO
