The Rest of Key Largo

In addition to our wonderful snorkeling trip, we did a few things above the water while in Key Largo. We kayaked the Canoe Trails in John Pennecamp State Park-

Through the mangroves. This is Red Mangrove, which is the one that grows closest to the water.

In town, we went to see the African Queen, over 100 years old.

She's famous for having been in the 1951 movie, "The African Queen."

She was restored in 2012, and you can even take a cruise on her now if you like.

The park had a small aquarium, where once again the star was the beautiful, but invasive, Lionfish.

They also showed the difference between the Crocodile, on the left, and the Alligator, on the right. I think I'll just stay away from both of them. Well, after I get a picture...

There are also a couple short hiking trails in the park. This is a well dug in 1965 to provide water that could be desalinated.

We saw many of the beautiful red-barked Gumbo Limbo trees.

There aren't too many things blooming this time of the year, but we saw this several places around town. Just gorgeous! Anyone know what it is?

  1. We love that area:) The African Queen looks a little tired.

  2. I'm with Chuck, the poor boat looks like it'd sink right under me. Fortunately I know the difference between a croc and a gator now so I'd know which one wanted to put a bite on me as I swam for my life! :cD
