Truckee and Lake Tahoe
From Walker Lake, we moved up to Truckee, CA, to a National Forest campground south of town along the Truckee River.
Sounds great, huh? Well, the river side was very nice, but on the other side the campground was along a very busy highway. But there were plenty of big spots available for the WINs.
Old town Truckee was very interesting. I liked this little trailer - I could probably pull it with my truck.
And if you want a room, they were very reasonable.
Within driving range was beautiful Lake Tahoe.
One day we drove all around the lake. Emerald Bay on the south end was the highlight.
We stopped at Fanny Bridge to look at the fish. I guess you can see how it got its name...
Earlier, Phil and I went on a couple short hikes. The hike to Long Lake starts out by crossing a small dam on Cascade Lake.
It's only a half mile to Long Lake, so this hardly counts as a hike.
On the way home we stopped to see Donner Lake. This is where the Donner party wagon train got stuck and had to spend the winter of 1846-47 snowbound.
The next day we took a little hike on the Pacific Crest trail. We went through an area with lots of boulders left by melting glaciers.
The Pacific Trail is well-maintained, and always fun to hike on.
In a few places, snow was still on the trail.
I wonder why I'm always lagging behind - could it be I'm taking too many butt shots?
Thank you so much for sharing your adventures.
ReplyDeleteUsed to be able to tour the set of "Bonanza" up near Mt. Rose. It wasn't there any more the last time I was, but I remember being shocked at how small it actually was.
ReplyDeleteThere's one street that separates California from Nevada. You can gamble on one side of the street and not the other.
Tahoe is a beautiful lake, but a little more crowded than I like--especially near the town of Reno Tahoe. Here are some fun facts about Tahoe. http://tinyurl.com/k2prm4e
We stayed on the Truckee right in Reno many times--Rich's sister lives there. In fact, I think where you were parked you probably could have seen my niece's house. Thanks for the memories.
That's such a beautiful area, snow or sunshine. When we used to vacation in Tahoe we always did the drive around the lake. :)
ReplyDeleteAha! Finally you went someplace where I've actually been, Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe. I think I was standing in the same spot as you were when you took that picture, I have shots that look exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteCan't say I've ever seen that trailer, though. You certainly could pull it with your truck and those antlers would discourage jaywalkers... ;c)
We consider this one of the prettiest places we've ever been and always enjoy others shots of the area.
ReplyDeleteWe have never spent any time exploring around Lake Tahoe and that is on my list. Love the Fanny Bridge picture. 38 here last night in WY.
