More Kaua'i Sights

Driving back down the Waimea Canyon road, we came upon another unexpected sight - Fort Elizabeth, one of 3 Russian forts built on Kaua'i in the early 1800s. This is what it looks like now -

But this is what it looked like then. It seems like there is something strange around ever corner here in Hawaii!

Next stop - Spouting Horn. Water, forced into a lava tube by the surf, gushes into the air making an eerie hissing noise. The ancient Hawaiians believed that Kaikapu, a lizard goddess, was trapped by a clever fisherman in the lava tube and the hissing is the sound of her angry roar.

There was another sea turtle nearby. Not a great shot - you'll have to use your imagination.

We stopped by Poipu Beach, where I went with my kids 25 years ago.

Back at the ship that evening, Phil and I went to another premium restaurant - Teppanyaki. I was expecting a lot more throwing around of food, but this guy was pretty good with throwing eggs.

Before the food prep, the photographer took pictures of everyone with the guy with the very sharp knives in the background. But at $20 a photo, you're only going to get my free shot.

The next day we went up the East side of the island, but not too far because there was a lot of construction and we were afraid we'd literally miss the boat. Our first stop was Wailua Falls. Look familiar? "The plane, the plane!" This was the waterfall in the opening of the TV show "Fantasy Island."

We had been seeing White-tailed Tropicbirds, and I finally got a picture.

Our next stop was Opaeka'a Falls, also on the Wailua river.

If you want to go to the Fern Grotto, you can go on a kayak trip up the river.

It looked like fun, but will have to wait for the next time.

For now, we just enjoyed the wildlife - peacocks and peahens -

And cute little chickies. They are everywhere on Kaua'i.

  1. With all those chickens running around, you'd think you were in Key West!

  4. I can't believe what a good shot you got of the white-tailed tropicbird. I know how far away that was.
