Another Capitol - Very Different

The North Dakota capitol building in Bismarck is very different from most capitols. It's known as "The Skyscraper on the Prairie." The tallest building in North Dakota, it's one of only 4 skyscraper state capitol buildings in the US.

It's a relatively new capitol building, since the old one burned down in 1930.

Groundbreaking for the new capitol took place in 1932, during the Great Depression.

The building contains unique woods and materials from many states and countries. The dark columns in Legislative Hall are made from East Indian Rosewood, while the light wood between them is Curly Maple.

The circular three-story west wing contains the legislative chambers - the House -

And the Senate.

The building is decorated in Art Deco style, popular in the 1930s. Memorial Hall boasts 40-foot bronze pillars, black marble and yellowstone travertine walls, and marble floors.

The lights are styled to look like stalks of wheat.

The Art Deco style is very evident on the elevator doors.

The Roughrider Gallery contains portraits of famous North Dakotans. Probably the most famous, Lawrence Welk was born in North Dakota in 1903.

  4. ITs a shame they lost the original Capitol building...Same thing happened to our capitol in Columbia, but it was done in a Stately look--the house n senate chambers look very much as the ones pictured above--This was really interesting..I love that old photo with the Indians too...shows they really did have genuine concern for the City and what was being done in stark contrast to the interest going the other way!!
    Safe Travels!!

  5. That art deco style is pretty unusual for a capitol building, not to mention the skyscraper.
