The Marion County Campground in Knoxville, IA, where we were staying, is less than a mile from the Knoxville Raceway, where the World of Outlaws Shootout was held last weekend. This is the premier dirt sprint car racing series for these little winged sprint cars.
Before the race, trucks went around and around to pack down the dirt.
Then these same trucks are used to get the little winged sprint cars going, since they have no starter in them.
And they're off!
The cars weigh only 1375 pounds, with the driver, and have about 800 horsepower, so they can really move! They whizz around the track at 140 mph, sliding sideways around the corners while the big "wing" keeps them from lifting off.
This car was owned by cutie-pie Kasey Kahne, but unfortunately he wasn't driving it.
The race was won by the "Wild Child," Jac Haudenschild, one of the crowd's favorites.
Those are neat looking cars, thanks for the post I enjoyed seeing the pictures and reading about the cars!
ReplyDeleteThis is the kind of racing I like. Used to go to Port Royal and Williams Grove Racetracks. Oh, the good old days. Thanks for the great photos.
