The South Side of Capitol Reef - WOW!

One day, we decided to do a 100-mile loop drive through the south end of Capitol Reef, going down the Notom-Bullfrog Road, then west on the Burr Trail to Boulder, then north back to Torrey.

As you go farther south, you can see how the Waterpocket Fold got its name - all the rocks seem to be standing on their side.

I had suggested we do a short hike into Surprise Canyon.

The various colors of the rocks are out-of-this-world!

Since I wasn't feeling so good, this was as far as I went. But it was great scenery.

After the hike, we went up the Burr Trail Switchbacks.

Where we had lunch at the picnic area there.

From there we drove into the Muley Twist Canyon 3 miles on a 4-wheel-drive road.

From the end of the road, it's a short walk to the Strike Valley Overlook. This is looking north the way we came -

And this is looking south down towards Glen Canyon and the Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell, where we left to go on a houseboat trip in October 2009.

  3. With such spectacular scenery, I wouldn't make much headway as I'd be stopping often to take pictures.

We would like to have gone down that road while there recently, but didn't have the appropriate vehicle. Glad you posted pictures.
