Running Through Arches

Wow, did I luck out in finding a camping spot in Moab! I'm in Goose Island campground, one of many BLM campgrounds along the Colorado River. This one is the closest to town and the parks.

I spent my first full day here seeing all the famous landmarks in Arches National Park that did not involve long hikes. Park Avenue is one of the first you come to -- it looks kind of like a sandstone city.

Around the corner is Courthouse Towers.

Right across the street from the Three Gossips.

Over to the East, in the Windows section of the park are Turret Arch,

North and South Window,

And Double Arch. This arch was used as a backdrop for the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The boulder on top of Balanced Rock is 55 feet high and weighs 3500 tons! Look out below!

Delicate Arch is the most widely recognized landmark in the park. I have hiked up to it many times, but this is what it looks like from the viewpoint.

Sand Dune Arch is in a sandy slot between two fins.

Much more to come on this favorite area of mine!

  2. Great pictures. Reminded me of the one time we hiked in the Arches. It was great seeing you at the family dinner back east.
